SEO for manufacturers: get found by the engineer before the directory gets the enquiry

Industrial buyers search by part number, grade, standard and tolerance, then send an RFQ to whoever answered precisely. Today that is usually IndiaMART, TradeIndia or a distributor. This is how manufacturers and exporters take that search back to their own site.

  1. Why do IndiaMART and TradeIndia rank above our own site?

Four problems, specific to manufacturers

  • 01

B2B directories own your product keywords

Search your product plus "manufacturer" and page one is directories. Their enquiries are shared with competitors.

  • 02

Your best content is locked in PDFs

Datasheets hold what an engineer needs. As PDFs they rank weakly and lead to no RFQ.

  • 03

Buyers search by specification, not brand

Engineers search a part number or an ASTM or IS grade. A marketing page per category matches none of it.

  • 04

Export markets need their own targeting

Buyers abroad use their own terms, units and standards. One site without hreflang ranks only in India.

Page one, today

Who owns page one, for the products you make

Buyers rarely reach a manufacturer’s own site. Spec-level queries change that.

Side by side

Generic SEO versus what a manufacturer needs

Industrial search is not consumer search.

TopicGeneric agency approachWhat a manufacturer needs
Keyword researchHigh-volume head terms from a tool.Part numbers, grades and standards taken from real RFQs.
Product pagesOne page per category. One page per product or series, with specs as HTML tables.
CompetitorsOther manufacturers’ websites.Directories and distributors first, since they hold the results.
ConversionA generic contact form.An RFQ form on every product page, with drawing upload.
InternationalTranslate the homepage, or nothing.Pages for the countries you export to, with hreflang.
ReportingTraffic and rankings.RFQs traced to their first organic visit, through to order.

The buying path

How an industrial buyer decides, and where search decides it

The engineer who finds you is rarely the one who sends the RFQ.

  1. 01

    Define the requirement

“which grade for high temperature valves”

Materials and standards come before suppliers.

    Search decides this
  2. 02

    Find suppliers

    “flange manufacturer astm a105”

Directories lead. A spec-level page puts you beside them.

    Search decides this
  3. 03

    Check the specification

    “part number datasheet”

Tolerances and certifications, readable without a form.

    Search decides this
  4. 04

    Shortlist and RFQ

Procurement compares quotes. A product-aware RFQ form helps.

  5. 05

    Approve and order

Decided internally. Tracking keeps the first visit on record.

The plan

The first six months, product line by product line

We start with what your sales team already knows.

  • RFQ and sales term miningMonth 1Real search terms from enquiries
  • Directory gap mapMonths 1 to 2Searches you have no page for
  • Spec sheets to product pagesMonths 2 to 5HTML specs with Product schema
  • RFQ captureMonths 2 to 3A product-aware form on every page
  • Export market pagesMonths 4 to 6Local standards, units and hreflang
  • First-visit attributionMonths 1 to 6RFQ traced through quote to order

A typical plan, not a guarantee. The order follows your priority product lines.

Why specifications matter more, now that buyers ask AI

Engineers now ask assistants to shortlist suppliers or pick a grade. The answers draw on pages that state specifications plainly. Specs locked in PDFs give them little to cite, so a directory’s clean table gets cited instead.

Each part number or grade may have only a handful of searches, but they come from people close to buying, and a product range has hundreds of them.

Thirty minutes on your site, your directory listings and your recent RFQs will show which product searches you are losing and whether the first fix is spec pages, RFQ capture or export targeting.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask us first.

Why does IndiaMART rank above our own website for our products?

Directories have a well-linked page for almost every product term; many manufacturer sites have one thin page per category. A dedicated page per product, with full specifications, is the more precise answer.

Should we stop paying for IndiaMART or TradeIndia?

Not as a first step. Directory enquiries are real business. Build organic demand alongside them, measure what each source produces, then decide on the spend.

Do PDF datasheets hurt our SEO?

They underperform. PDFs rank weakly, cannot hold an RFQ form and go stale. Put specifications on an HTML page, offer the PDF as a download, and do not gate the data behind a form.

Is it worth targeting part numbers with tiny search volumes?

Usually yes. Part number and grade searches come from buyers who know what they need, and a range produces hundreds of them. Together they are high-intent traffic.

How do we rank in export markets like the UAE, Europe or the US?

Build pages for the markets you sell into, using local standards, units and terms, connected by hreflang. Certifications and shipping terms help both ranking and conversion.

How long does SEO take for a manufacturing website?

Indexing, page structure and RFQ capture fixes can show within a few months. Broad supplier terms take longer. We set expectations per product line after the first audit.

How do we know SEO is working when a sale takes months to close?

Track RFQs and datasheet downloads back to the first visit, and keep that source in your CRM through quote and order. Otherwise every channel looks like direct traffic.
